蒙彼利埃大学成立于1289年，是世界上最古老的大学之一，其历史可追溯至中世纪。该校由当时的医学院、艺术院与法学院合并而成，在法国文艺复兴时期便已成为知识重镇，培养了拉伯雷、奥古斯特·孔德等著名学者，中国近代数学家熊庆来、生物学家周太玄等也曾在此求学。1970年，大学因法国教育改革分为第一、第二、第三大学，分别侧重医学、理工科及人文社科领域；2016年，蒙彼利埃第一大学与第二大学正式合并，重新整合为综合性的蒙彼利埃大学，现为全法排名第八、世界前200的顶尖高校，也是欧洲科英布拉集团成员。

Founded in 1289, the University of Montpellier is one of the oldest universities in the world with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. It was formed by the merger of the local medical school, arts college, and law school, emerging as an intellectual hub during the French Renaissance. Notable alumni include writer François Rabelais, philosopher Auguste Comte, and Chinese scholars such as mathematician Xiong Qinglai and biologist Zhou Taixuan. Following France's 1970 educational reforms, it split into three institutions specializing in medicine, science/engineering, and humanities respectively. In 2016, the first and second universities merged to reestablish the University of Montpellier as a comprehensive institution, now ranked 8th in France and among the world's top 200 universities, and a member of the European Coimbra Group.
