武汉大学是国家教育部直属重点综合性大学，是国家“985工程”和“211工程”重点建设高校，首批“双一流”建设高校。学校溯源于1893年清末湖广总督张之洞奏请清政府创办的自强学堂，历经传承演变，1928年定名为国立武汉大学，是近代中国第一批国立大学。

Wuhan University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of China, a key construction university of the national "985 Project" and "211 Project", and one of the first batch of "Double First-Class" construction universities. The university traces its origin to Ziqiang School founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty, upon the approval of the Qing government. After inheritance and evolution, it was named National Wuhan University in 1928, being one of the first national universities in modern China.

学校学科门类齐全、特色鲜明，涵盖了哲、经、法、教育、文、史、理、工、农、医、管理、艺术等12个学科门类。拥有5个国家重点一级学科，17个国家重点二级学科，6个国家重点（培育）学科；有49个一级学科博士学位授权点，59个一级学科硕士学位授权点，46个博士后科研流动站。

The university has a complete range of disciplines with distinctive features, covering 12 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art. It has 5 national key first-level disciplines, 17 national key second-level disciplines, 6 national key (cultivation) disciplines; 49 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 59 first-level discipline master degree authorization points, and 46 post-doctoral research stations.

武汉大学师资力量雄厚，现有专任教师3800余人，其中正副教授2900余人，有中国科学院院士11人、中国工程院院士8人，国家杰出青年科学基金获得者100余人，国家级教学名师15人。学校始终坚持立德树人根本任务，着力培养德智体美劳全面发展的社会主义建设者和接班人，已累计培养了50余万名各类高级专门人才，许多校友成为国家政治、经济、科技、文化等领域的骨干力量。

The campus environment of the university is beautiful, known as one of "the most beautiful universities in China". Surrounding the East Lake and sitting on Luojia Mountain, the palace-style buildings with Chinese-Western style in the campus are simple and elegant, majestic and spectacular, and 26 early buildings have been listed as national key cultural relics protection units.
