Al-Azhar University is located in Cairo, the capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt, specifically in the Nasr City area of Cairo at the address Al Mokhaym Al Daem, Gameat Al Azhar. Founded by the Fatimid dynasty in 970 AD and officially completed in 972 AD, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the world. Its establishment is closely linked to the famous Al-Azhar Mosque, initially serving as an academic附属机构 of the mosque before evolving into a modern university over time.

Although its main campus is in Cairo, Al-Azhar University also has branch campuses in other major Egyptian cities. It has 14 colleges within Cairo and an additional 22 branches in cities such as Alexandria, Sohag, Asyut, and Tanta, a distribution model that extends its influence nationwide. As Egypt's second-largest comprehensive university, it plays a significant role in Cairo's urban life and Egypt's higher education system, serving not only as an academic landmark of Egypt but also as an important bridge connecting Islamic civilization past and present.
