American University (AU) was founded in 1893 as a private research university in Washington, D.C., established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in response to President George Washington's initiative to create a national university. Located in the Embassy Row neighborhood of Northwest D.C., the 95-acre campus sits 4 miles from the White House, surrounded by diplomatic missions in one of the city's safest areas. A member of the Patriot League, AU emphasizes internationalization and diversity, excelling in political science, international relations, and public policy. It has hosted 11 U.S. presidents and counted 6 as board members.

The university comprises eight schools and colleges, including the College of Arts & Sciences, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, and School of International Service, offering over 160 programs with 71 undergraduate majors, 87 master’s degrees, and 10 doctoral programs. Its diverse student body of 13,000 represents 152 countries and all 50 U.S. states, supported by a 14:1 faculty-to-student ratio. Campus facilities feature a 780,000-volume library, multimedia classrooms, scientific labs, and 24/7 computer centers. With 89% of undergraduates participating in internships and 60% studying abroad, graduates frequently enter government, international organizations, and multinational corporations.
