Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was founded in 1940, formerly known as Yan'an Natural Science Institute. It is the first university of science and engineering established by the Communist Party of China and is now affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. As a national "Double First-Class" construction university, BIT was among the first batch of universities included in China's "211 Project" and "985 Project". Over its long development, it has formed the school-running orientation of "Cultivating Talents with Yan'an Spirit and Establishing the University with Military Industry Characteristics", featuring engineering as the main discipline, integration of science and engineering, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines including engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, and art.
BIT has always breathed and shared a common fate with the Party and the country, making outstanding contributions in the field of national defense science and technology and cultivating a large number of outstanding talents, such as 12 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and more than 30 directors of national key laboratories. Currently, it has two campuses in Zhongguancun and Liangxiang, with 20 professional colleges. Nine disciplines have entered the top 1% of ESI globally, among which engineering and materials science have ranked among the top 1‰. Adhering to the fundamental task of "Cultivating Morality and Fostering Talents", the university focuses on cultivating students' innovative ability and has formed distinct advantages in cutting-edge fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and aerospace engineering.
