北京服装学院是全国唯一以服装命名，艺工为主，艺、工、经、管、理等多学科协调发展，具有鲜明办学特色的全日制普通高等学校。学校始建于1959年，原名北京纺织工学院，1961年更名为北京化学纤维工学院，1987年改扩建为北京服装学院，1998年由纺织工业部划转北京市为主管理。

Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT) is the only full-time ordinary institution of higher education in China named after fashion, which focuses on art and engineering, and develops coordinately multiple disciplines such as art, engineering, economics, management and science with distinct school-running characteristics. Founded in 1959, the school was originally named Beijing Institute of Textile Technology, renamed Beijing Institute of Chemical Fiber Technology in 1961, expanded and rebuilt into Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology in 1987, and transferred to Beijing Municipal Government for management in 1998 from the Ministry of Textile Industry.
