北京林业大学是教育部直属、教育部与国家林业和草原局共建的全国重点大学，国家“双一流”建设高校”，国家“211工程”建设高校。学校办学历史可追溯至1902年的京师大学堂农业科林学目，1952年全国院系调整时，北京农业大学森林系与河北农学院森林系合并，成立北京林学院。1956年，北京农业大学造园系和清华大学建筑系部分并入学校。1985年更名为北京林业大学。

Beijing Forestry University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. It is a "Double First-Class" construction university and a "211 Project" construction university. The school's educational history can be traced back to the Forestry Program of the Agricultural Department of Peking University in 1902. During the national department adjustment in 1952, the Forestry Department of Beijing Agricultural University and the Forestry Department of Hebei Agricultural College merged to establish Beijing Forestry College. In 1956, the Gardening Department of Beijing Agricultural University and part of the Architecture Department of Tsinghua University were merged into the school. It was renamed Beijing Forestry University in 1985.

学校以林学、风景园林学、林业工程、草学为优势学科，形成了理、工、农、文、管、经、法、艺等多学科协调发展的学科专业体系。学校现有17个学院，65个本科专业，拥有一级学科国家重点学科5个，二级学科国家重点学科3个，国家重点（培育）学科1个，世界一流建设学科2个。学校面向全国31个省（自治区、直辖市）及港澳台地区招生，形成了从本科生到硕士生、博士生、博士后及留学生的完整人才培养体系。

The university takes forestry, landscape architecture, forestry engineering, and grass science as its dominant disciplines, forming a disciplinary and professional system with coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as science, engineering, agriculture, liberal arts, management, economics, law, and art. The university currently has 17 colleges and 65 undergraduate majors, with 5 national key disciplines at the first-level, 3 national key disciplines at the second-level, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, and 2 world-class construction disciplines. The university enrolls students from 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government) and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions, forming a complete talent training system from undergraduates to master's students, doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and international students.
