大连理工大学是中国共产党在新中国成立前夕，面向新中国工业体系建设亲手创办的第一所新型正规大学。学校成立于1949年4月，时为大连大学工学院；1950年7月，大连大学建制撤销，大连大学工学院独立为大连工学院；1988年3月，更名为大连理工大学。

Dalian University of Technology (DUT) is the first new type of regular university founded by the Communist Party of China for the construction of New China's industrial system on the eve of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The university was established in April 1949 as the Engineering College of Dalian University; in July 1950, the organizational system of Dalian University was revoked, and the Engineering College of Dalian University became independent as Dalian Institute of Technology; in March 1988, it was renamed Dalian University of Technology.

学校是国家“双一流”建设高校，国家“985工程”“211工程”重点建设高校。学校以人才培养为根本任务，着力培养“有理想、敢担当、能吃苦、肯奋斗”的时代新人，已形成以理工为主，理、工、经、管、文、法、哲、艺术等多学科协调发展的学科专业体系。

The university is a national "Double First-Class" construction university, and a key construction university of the national "985 Project" and "211 Project".
