贵州民族大学创建于1951年5月17日，隶属贵州省人民政府，是新中国创建最早的民族院校之一，是贵州省重点建设高校、贵州省人民政府和国家民委共建高校，中国政府奖学金来华留学生培养高校。学校现有两个校区，花溪校区坐落于山清水秀、被誉为“高原明珠”的贵阳市花溪区，大学城校区位于产城融合创新、生态文明示范的国家级贵安新区，占地面积共2864亩，校舍面积79.6万平方米。

Guizhou Minzu University was founded on May 17, 1951. Affiliated to the People's Government of Guizhou Province, it is one of the earliest ethnic universities established in New China. It is a key construction university in Guizhou Province, a joint university co-constructed by the People's Government of Guizhou Province and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and an institution for cultivating international students under the Chinese Government Scholarship Program. The university has two campuses: the Huaxi Campus is located in the scenic Huaxi District of Guiyang City, known as the "Plateau Pearl" for its beautiful mountains and rivers; the University Town Campus is situated in the national-level Gui'an New District, a model area for industrial-city integration and ecological civilization. The total campus area is 2,864 mu, with a building area of 796,000 square meters.

学校面向全国招生，现有全日制在校生2万余人，专任教师1196人，其中正高职称177人、副高职称554人，具有博士学位519人。学校设有81个普通本科专业，10个一级学科硕士学位授权点，20个专业硕士学位授权点，1个服务国家特殊需求博士人才培养项目。学科涵盖哲学、经济学、法学、教育学、文学、历史学、理学、工学、管理学、艺术学等10个门类，形成了以民族学、社会学、法学、历史学等优势学科为引领，多学科协调发展的学科体系。

The university enrolls students nationwide, with over 20,000 full-time students and 1,196 full-time teachers, including 177 professors, 554 associate professors, and 519 teachers with doctoral degrees. It offers 81 undergraduate programs, 10 first-level discipline master's programs, 20 professional master's programs, and 1 doctoral talent cultivation program serving national special needs. Covering 10 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art, the university has formed a disciplinary system led by dominant disciplines such as ethnology, sociology, law, and history, with coordinated development of multiple disciplines.

学校始终秉承“服务贵州、服务少数民族和民族地区、服务国家战略和特殊需求”的办学宗旨，已发展成为贵州民族地区人才培养培训基地、科技研发基地、民族优秀文化传承创新基地、民族团结进步示范基地和民族地区经济社会发展重要智库。先后与美国、英国、法国等20多个国家的高校建立合作关系，现有来自24个国家的留学生近400人，是西南地区民族高等教育的重要基地。

Adhering to the mission of "serving Guizhou, serving ethnic minorities and ethnic regions, and serving national strategies and special needs", the university has developed into a talent training base, a scientific research and development base, a base for inheriting and innovating excellent ethnic cultures, a demonstration base for national unity and progress, and an important think tank for economic and social development in ethnic regions of Guizhou. It has established cooperative relations with universities in more than 20 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, and currently has nearly 400 international students from 24 countries, serving as an important base for ethnic higher education in southwest China.
