Jiangsu University of Science and Technology is located in Zhenjiang, a beautiful national historical and cultural city in Jiangsu Province. It is an ordinary institution of higher learning with engineering as its main focus and distinctive characteristics. It is a high-level university construction institution in Jiangsu, an excellent university in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and a university in the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education. In terms of comprehensive strength, the university ranked 130th among universities in mainland China in the USNews 2023 World University Comprehensive Rankings and 137th among Chinese universities in the 2023 Soft Science China University Rankings.

学校办学历史源远流长，多源合流，文化底蕴深厚。源自1933年上海私立大公职业学校，1953年组建成立新中国第一所造船中等专业学校——上海船舶工业学校，于1970年迁至镇江，1971年更名为镇江船舶工业学校，1978年升格为镇江船舶学院，1993年更名为华东船舶工业学院。曾隶属原中国船舶工业总公司管理，1999年调整为中央与江苏省共建、以江苏省管理为主；同年，江苏省江海贸易学校并入，2000年中国农业科学院蚕业研究所与学校合并，2004年更名为江苏科技大学，2021年入选江苏高水平大学建设高峰计划建设高校。

The university has a long history of running schools, with multiple sources converging and profound cultural heritage. It originated from the private Dagong Vocational School in Shanghai in 1933. In 1953, it was reorganized into the Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry School, the first secondary specialized school for shipbuilding in New China. It was moved to Zhenjiang in 1970, renamed Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Industry School in 1971, upgraded to Zhenjiang Shipbuilding College in 1978, and renamed East China Shipbuilding Industry College in 1993. It was once under the management of the former China State Shipbuilding Corporation. In 1999, it was adjusted to be jointly built by the central government and Jiangsu Province, with Jiangsu Province as the main administrator. In the same year, Jiangsu Jianghai Trade School was merged into it. In 2000, the Sericulture Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences was merged with the university. In 2004, it was renamed Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, and in 2021, it was selected into the peak plan for high-level university construction in Jiangsu.
