南京航空航天大学创建于1952年10月，是新中国自己创办的第一批航空高等院校之一。1978年被国务院确定为全国重点大学；1981年经国务院批准成为全国首批具有博士学位授予权的高校；1996年进入国家“211工程”建设；2000年经教育部批准设立研究生院；2011年，成为“985工程优势学科创新平台”重点建设高校；2017年，入选国家“双一流”建设高校，航空宇航科学与技术学科入选“双一流”建设学科；2022年，再次入选国家“双一流”建设高校，航空宇航科学与技术、力学两个学科入选“双一流”建设学科。

Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) was founded in October 1952 and is one of the first batch of aviation institutions of higher learning established by New China. In 1978, it was designated as a national key university by the State Council; in 1981, it was approved by the State Council as one of the first universities in China with the right to grant doctoral degrees; in 1996, it entered the construction of the national "211 Project"; in 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a graduate school; in 2011, it became a key construction university of the "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform"; in 2017, it was selected into the national "Double First-Class" construction universities, and the discipline of Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology was selected into the "Double First-Class" construction disciplines; in 2022, it was again selected into the national "Double First-Class" construction universities, with two disciplines of Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology and Mechanics selected into the "Double First-Class" construction disciplines.

学校现设有18个学院，拥有62个本科专业，涵盖工学、理学、管理学、经济学、哲学、法学、文学、教育学、艺术学等9个学科门类。学校现有教职工3600余人，其中专任教师2200余人，教授、副教授1500余人，中国科学院、中国工程院院士12人，国家级领军人才100余人，国家级青年人才170余人。学校现有全日制在校生35000余人，其中本科生19000余人，研究生16000余人，学位留学生1000余人。

The university currently has 18 colleges and 62 undergraduate majors, covering 9 disciplines including engineering, science, management, economics, philosophy, law, literature, education, and art. The university currently has more than 3,600 faculty members, including more than 2,200 full-time teachers, more than 1,500 professors and associate professors, 12 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, more than 100 national-level leading talents, and more than 170 national-level young talents. The university currently has more than 35,000 full-time students, including more than 19,000 undergraduates, more than 16,000 postgraduates, and more than 1,000 international students for degrees.

学校科研实力雄厚，拥有一批国家级科研平台，如机械结构力学及控制国家重点实验室、直升机旋翼动力学国家级重点实验室、航空科技重点实验室等。学校在航空宇航制造工程、飞行器设计、航空发动机设计等领域具有深厚的科研积累和鲜明的特色优势，先后承担了一批国家重大专项、国家重点研发计划、国防科技重大项目等，取得了一批具有重大影响的科研成果。
