南京艺术学院是江苏省唯一的综合性高等艺术学府，其前身可追溯至1912年中国美术教育的奠基人刘海粟先生创办的上海图画美术院，以及1922年颜文樑先生创办的苏州美术专科学校。历经百年发展，学校已形成覆盖艺术学门类下所有五个一级学科（音乐与舞蹈学、戏剧与影视学、美术学、设计学、艺术学理论）的学科体系，是全国30所独立设置的本科艺术院校之一，也是教育部确定的31所独立设置本科艺术院校中唯一一所综合性艺术院校。

Nanjing University of the Arts is the only comprehensive higher art institution in Jiangsu Province. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Shanghai School of Fine Arts founded in 1912 by Mr. Liu Haisu, the founder of Chinese art education, and the Suzhou Academy of Fine Arts founded in 1922 by Mr. Yan Wenliang. After a century of development, the university has formed a disciplinary system covering all five first-level disciplines under the category of arts (Music and Dance Studies, Drama and Film Studies, Fine Arts, Design, and Art Theory). It is one of the 30 independently established undergraduate art colleges in China and the only comprehensive art college among the 31 independently established undergraduate art colleges designated by the Ministry of Education.
