Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) was founded in 1887, with its roots tracing back to Dublin Technical School, College of Music, and College of Marketing and Design in the late 19th century. In 1992, under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act enacted by the Irish government, six independent colleges merged to form the present-day DIT, which was officially established on January 1, 1993. It became Ireland's only institute of technology with independent university status, authorized to award academic qualifications from foundation to doctoral levels.

The institute comprises six faculties: Faculty of Applied Arts, Business School, College of Architecture and Environment, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, and College of Tourism and Food. It has approximately 21,000 students across six campuses in central Dublin. As one of Ireland's largest higher education institutions, DIT is renowned for its applied courses and practical teaching, emphasizing the integration of knowledge with industry needs. Its graduates have consistently ranked among the top in employment rates among Irish universities. The institute also provides students with abundant practical opportunities and research support through specialized research institutions, university-affiliated enterprises, and internship programs.

The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management, established in 1941, is Ireland's oldest education center for hospitality and catering management, with a world-leading curriculum system.
