Founded in 1947, the University of Oriente-Santiago de Cuba traces its roots to the Colegio de San Basilio Magno established in 1722. As one of Cuba's top five public comprehensive universities, it is located in Santiago de Cuba. With the motto "Science and Conscience", the university comprises 13 faculties covering engineering, natural sciences, and humanities, offering 57 undergraduate programs, 30 master's programs, and 15 doctoral programs, with strengths in chemical engineering, agriculture, and law.

Its research centers, such as the Applied New Energy Research Center, are highly regarded.
