The National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), founded in 1847, is the oldest public university in Honduras and the country's largest and highest-ranked institution of higher education, also being one of the largest university systems in Central America. Its main campus is located in the capital city of Tegucigalpa, with the second-largest campus in the northern industrial hub of San Pedro Sula. These two campuses account for over 80% of the student population, complemented by seven regional centers nationwide. In 2019, UNAH had over 100,000 enrolled students and offers more than 140 programs ranging from undergraduate to doctoral degrees.

UNAH excels in disciplines such as medicine, engineering, law, and economic management. Its medical program boasts a long history, supported by an affiliated hospital for clinical training. The Faculty of Engineering covers multiple fields including chemical, electrical, and civil engineering, while law school graduates enjoy high prestige in Honduras' legal sector. In recent years, UNAH has actively promoted digital transformation by building modern network infrastructure across its nationwide campuses, enhancing distance education and resource-sharing capabilities, aiming to lead higher education reforms in Central America.
