The University of Gdańsk was founded in 1970 through the merger of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot and the Higher Pedagogical School in Gdańsk, with its roots tracing back to the Higher Maritime Trade School in Sopot established in 1945. As the largest higher education institution in the Pomeranian region of northern Poland, it has evolved into a comprehensive university covering 74 research fields and 221 majors, with over 35,000 students and approximately 1,700 faculty members and foreign language teacher trainers.

As a member of SEA-EU (European SEAS Alliance Universities), it has signed cooperation agreements with over 100 international institutions worldwide, actively participates in international exchange programs like Socrates/Erasmus, and hosts a Confucius Institute to promote cultural exchange.

The University of Gdańsk comprises 11 faculties and over 70 modern laboratories. Its library houses 1.5 million physical books, over 3 million e-books, and subscribes to 109,370 scientific journals. Focusing on research innovation, it participates in 35 international research projects and 262 national-level projects. In the 2025 QS World University Rankings, it placed around 850th, and ranked among the top 1000 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It has also entered the global top 400 in the Young University Rankings, being the only Polish university to receive this honor.
