The University of Pécs (Pécsi Tudományegyetem) is Hungary's first university, founded in 1367 during the Middle Ages with the permission of Pope Urban V at the request of Hungarian King Louis I. The university's history has seen several transformations: its medical school became independent in 1951, and in 2000, it merged with Janus Pannonius University to form the present-day University of Pécs. A pioneer in internationalization, it offers over 100 English and multilingual programs, attracting students from 136 countries. Its credit system aligns with the Bologna Process, ensuring global recognition of qualifications. The medical faculty, in particular, stands out as the first in Central Europe to offer English-language medical courses and is listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) directory of medical schools.
