Founded in 1942 as part of the University of Ceylon, the University of Peradeniya is one of the oldest and largest public universities in Sri Lanka. Located in Peradeniya, Central Province, it is approximately 6 kilometers from Kandy and a 3-hour drive from Colombo, the economic capital. Covering an area of about 700 hectares, the campus is lush with greenery and surrounded by mountains, described as "a historic tropical botanical garden," offering an open and natural learning environment with facilities such as information centers, libraries, and indoor-outdoor sports venues.

Renowned for its academic excellence, it is a top-ranked university in Sri Lanka, placing 261-270 in the 2023 QS Asian University Rankings and 401-500 in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, making it one of Sri Lanka's highest internationally ranked universities.
