Brussels University, namely Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), was formerly the Free University of Belgium founded in 1834 and officially renamed Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 1842. Located in Brussels, the capital of Belgium known as the "Capital of Europe", it is a comprehensive research university funded by the Belgian government, renowned in Europe for disciplines such as medicine, engineering, theoretical physics, electronics, computer applications, and management.

The university is divided into Dutch-speaking and French-speaking regions, both now independent teaching entities. Among them, the Dutch-speaking Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) ranked 278th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. It has 3 green campuses, 8 faculties, offering 27 undergraduate programs, 105 master's and advanced master's programs (including 32 English-taught master's programs), and 35 doctoral disciplines. There are approximately 14,000 students in total, with international students accounting for 25% from 129 countries, forming a highly international academic environment.

Brussels Free University has produced 4 Nobel laureates in history, including Jules Bordet (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1919), Albert Claude (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1974), Ilya Prigogine (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1977), and François Englert (Nobel Prize in Physics, 2013).
