Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU), commonly known as the University of Münster, is a public research university located in Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its origins date back to a religious school founded in 1588, with official university status granted by the Archbishop of Cologne in 1771 and student enrollment beginning in 1780. In 1902, it received its current name from German Emperor Wilhelm II and is now a member of the U15 Group of major German research universities, ranking among Germany's largest and most popular academic institutions.
