文山学院前身是1947年2月由云南昭通南迁至文山的国立西南师范学校，1984年4月经云南省人民政府批准成立文山师范专科学校，全国人大原副委员长楚图南先生为学校题写校名，1992年更名为文山师范高等专科学校，2009年4月，教育部批准升格为全日制普通本科院校，2018年通过教育部本科教学工作合格评估。2019年，成为云南省应用型本科人才培养示范校。2022年5月，云南省教育厅与文山州人民政府签订共建文山学院协议，学校成为全省第一家厅州共建高校。

The predecessor of Wenshan University was the National Southwest Normal School, which was relocated from Zhaotong, Yunnan to Wenshan in February 1947. In April 1984, it was approved by the People's Government of Yunnan Province to establish Wenshan Teachers' College. Mr. Chu Tunan, former vice chairman of the National People's Congress, inscribed the school name. In 1992, it was renamed Wenshan Teachers' College. In April 2009, the Ministry of Education approved its升格 to a full-time ordinary undergraduate college. In 2018, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification assessment of the Ministry of Education. In 2019, it became a demonstration school for applied undergraduate talent training in Yunnan Province. In May 2022, the Education Department of Yunnan Province and the People's Government of Wenshan Prefecture signed an agreement to jointly build Wenshan University, making it the first university jointly built by the department and the prefecture in the province.

目前，学校占地面积874.98亩，校舍面积26.13万平方米，图书馆纸质藏书104.6万册，电子图书89.8万册，固定资产总值61063.8万元，设备总值12805.1万元。学校面向全国22个省（自治区、直辖市）招生，现有全日制在校生14189人（本科生12202人、专科生1987人）。现有教职工653人，其中专任教师523人，副高以上职称教师220人（正高职称56人，其中二级教授2人；副高职称164人），拥有硕士以上学位教师417人（博士25人），10余位教师先后被云南师范大学、昆明理工大学、云南中医学院、云南农业大学、云南民族大学聘为硕士生导师。

At present, the university covers an area of 874.98 mu, with a school building area of 261,300 square meters. The library has 1,046,000 paper books, 898,000 e-books, a total fixed asset value of 610,638,000 yuan, and equipment value of 128,051,000 yuan. The university enrolls students from 22 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government) across the country, with 14,189 full-time students (12,202 undergraduates and 1,987 junior college students). There are 653 faculty members, including 523 full-time teachers, 220 teachers with associate senior titles or above (56 with senior titles, including 2 second-level professors; 164 with associate senior titles), 417 teachers with master's degrees or above (25 with doctoral degrees), and more than 10 teachers have been employed as master's supervisors by Yunnan Normal University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yunnan Agricultural University, and Yunnan Minzu University.

学校下设文山三七研究院、文山州生物资源开发研究中心、文山民族文化传承与创新研究中心3个学术科研机构，建有中国中医科学院中药研究所三七研究基地、云南省三七工程技术研究中心、云南省博士后科研工作站等10个省厅级研究中心、实验室和专家工作站。综合性学术期刊《文山学院学报》面向国内外公开发行。学校下设教师教育学院、三七医药学院、人文与传媒学院、美术与设计学院、经济管理学院、人工智能学院、冶金与材料学院、马克思主义学院和高等职业技术学院9个二级学院，有60个本、专科专业（本科47个，专科专业13个）。

The university has 3 academic research institutions: Wenshan Panax Notoginseng Research Institute, Wenshan Prefecture Biological Resources Development Research Center, and Wenshan Ethnic Culture Inheritance and Innovation Research Center. It has built 10 provincial and department-level research centers, laboratories and expert workstations, such as the Panax Notoginseng Research Base of the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Yunnan Panax Notoginseng Engineering Technology Research Center, and Yunnan Postdoctoral Research Workstation. The comprehensive academic journal "Journal of Wenshan University" is publicly distributed at home and abroad. The university has 9 secondary colleges: School of Teacher Education, School of Panax Notoginseng Medicine, School of Humanities and Media, School of Fine Arts and Design, School of Economics and Management, School of Artificial Intelligence, School of Metallurgy and Materials, School of Marxism, and School of Higher Vocational and Technical Education, with 60 undergraduate and junior college majors (47 undergraduate majors and 13 junior college majors).

现有省级博士后科研工作站1个，省级教学团队2个，省级科技创新团队2个，省级优势特色重点学科1个，省级本科专业综合改革试点项目1个，省级一流学科（B类高原学科）1个，省级特色专业（群）4个，省级一流专业建设点5个，省级新兴专业1个，省级精品课程2门，省级规划教材4部，云南省突出贡献专家3人，享受省政府特殊津贴专家2人，云南省教学名师2人，入选云南省技术创新人才培养计划5人，入选云南省兴滇英才产业创新人才3人、青年人才2人，云南省高校卓越青年教师特殊培养项目对象3人；获云南省高等教育教学成果二等奖1项、基础教育教学成果一等奖2项。
