兴义民族师范学院的办学渊源可追溯至清嘉庆十八年（1813年）重建的笔山书院，1952年2月组建贵州省兴义师范学校后，开启了黔西南地区现代师范教育的历史。1975年名为兴义地区五·七师范大学，1978年改称兴义师范专科学校，1982年改名黔西南民族师专，1993年更名为黔西南民族师范高等专科学校。2005年，兴义师范学校、安龙民族师范学校并入，扩大了办学规模。2009年3月，经教育部批准正式升格为兴义民族师范学院，系省州共建、以州为主的地方性全日制本科院校。2016年12月通过教育部本科教学工作合格评估，2017年列为贵州省第二批应用型发展转型试点高校，2019年与贵州师范大学联合培养研究生并招生。学校秉承“勤学、尚美、求实、创新”的校训，为国家培养各级各类人才近4万人，为黔西南州经济社会发展作出积极贡献。

The origin of Xingyi Normal University for Nationalities can be traced back to the Bishan Academy rebuilt in the 18th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1813). In February 1952, Guizhou Xingyi Normal School was established, which started the history of modern normal education in southwestern Guizhou. In 1975, it was named Xingyi District May 7th Normal University, renamed Xingyi Teachers College in 1978, Qianxinan National Teachers College in 1982, and Qianxinan National Teachers College in 1993. In 2005, Xingyi Normal School and Anlong National Normal School were merged into it, expanding the school-running scale. In March 2009, it was officially upgraded to Xingyi Normal University for Nationalities with the approval of the Ministry of Education, which is a local full-time undergraduate college jointly built by the province and the prefecture, with the prefecture as the main body. In December 2016, it passed the qualification assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education. In 2017, it was listed as the second batch of applied development transformation pilot universities in Guizhou Province. In 2019, it jointly cultivated postgraduates with Guizhou Normal University and enrolled students. Adhering to the school motto of "Diligent in Learning, Advocating Beauty, Seeking Truth and Innovating", the university has cultivated nearly 40,000 talents of various types for the country and made positive contributions to the economic and social development of Qianxinan Prefecture.

学校位于黔西南布依族苗族自治州州府兴义市，占地1118亩，校舍建筑总面积30.4万平方米，教学科研及辅助用房14.12万平方米，馆藏纸质图书86.08万册、电子图书100.18万册，教学科研仪器设备总值8168.05万元。现有12个二级教学学院，42个本科专业，涵盖文学、理学、工学、农学、法学、教育学、历史学、经济学、管理学、艺术学十大学科门类，拥有5个省级重点支持学科、5个省级综合改革试点专业、30门省级一流课程和9个省级一流专业。在职教职工741人，其中正高职称74人、副高职称246人，博士119人、硕士404人；全日制在校生12121人，2022年本专科毕业去向落实率达80.13%。

The university is located in Xingyi City, the capital of Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, covering an area of 1118 mu, with a total school building area of 304,000 square meters, 141,200 square meters of teaching and research auxiliary rooms, 860,800 paper books, 1,001,800 e-books in the library, and the total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 81.6805 million yuan. It has 12 secondary teaching colleges and 42 undergraduate majors, covering ten disciplines including literature, science, engineering, agriculture, law, education, history, economics, management, and art. It has 5 provincial key support disciplines, 5 provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors, 30 provincial first-class courses and 9 provincial first-class majors. There are 741 in-service faculty members, including 74 with senior titles, 246 with deputy senior titles, 119 doctors and 404 masters; 12,121 full-time students, and the employment rate of undergraduates and junior college graduates reached 80.13% in 2022.
