China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) is a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education, a national "Double First-Class" construction university, and a university under the "211 Project" and "985 Project Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform" construction. With geoscience as its main feature, the university develops coordinately in multiple disciplines such as science, engineering, liberal arts and management, and is one of the important bases for high-level talent training and scientific research in earth sciences in China. The university has two national first-class key disciplines: Geology, and Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, and has remarkable advantages in fields such as Quaternary Geology, and Mineral Resources Prospecting and Exploration. Located in Hongshan District, Wuhan, the campus covers an area of about 11,325 mu, with multiple national-level scientific research platforms such as State Key Laboratories and National Engineering Technology Research Centers. The collected literature covers geosciences and related disciplines, among which the collection of geological literature ranks first in China. The university attaches importance to international exchanges and cooperation, has established stable cooperative relations with many universities and scientific research institutions around the world, and has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents engaged in geological undertakings, known as "the cradle of Chinese geological engineers".
The predecessor of the university was Beijing Institute of Geology, which was established in 1952 by merging the geology departments (sections) of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, and Tangshan Railway Institute. It moved to Jiangling, Hubei in 1970 and was renamed Hubei Institute of Geology. In 1975, it moved to Wuhan and was renamed Wuhan Institute of Geology. In 1987, the State Education Commission approved Wuhan Institute of Geology to be renamed China University of Geosciences, running schools in both Wuhan and Beijing with the headquarters in Wuhan. In 1997, the university became a key construction university of the national "211 Project". In 2006, the Ministry of Education approved China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) to be an independent institution. In 2017, the university entered the list of national "Double First-Class" construction universities. After more than 70 years of development, the university has formed the school motto of "Hard Work, Simplicity, Truth-Seeking and Pragmatism" and the fine school spirit of "Strictness in CUG, Learning in CUG". It has achieved a series of major scientific research results in fields such as geological prospecting, environmental protection, and new energy development, making important contributions to national economic and social development and the progress of geological undertakings.
