Established in 1922, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious English-speaking universities in Africa, located in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. A member of the World University Consortium, it originated as the Uganda Technical College, became an affiliate college of the University of London in 1949, joined the formation of the University of East Africa in 1963, and gained independence under the Parliament Act in 1970 with its current name. Offering 145 undergraduate programs and 139 postgraduate programs across three campuses, it enrolls 35,000 students including 3,000 postgraduates. As a national university, it hosts a Confucius Institute in partnership with Xiangtan University and pioneered Africa's first undergraduate program in Chinese language, holding significant influence in African higher education.
