The school's educational history can be traced back to the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China. From 1951 to 1953, Changchun Civil Engineering and Architecture Senior Vocational School, Changchun Surveying and Geological Technology School and Changchun Hydropower Engineering School were established successively. After 50 years, the three schools were renamed several times, and their affiliation and educational levels were changed many times, mainly under the management of the former Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power, and the China National Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation. In the 1960s, Changchun Hydropower Engineering School was upgraded and renamed Jilin Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower, offering undergraduate education. In 1997, all three schools became key construction schools of national demonstration higher engineering colleges. In March 2000, the three schools merged to form Changchun Institute of Technology. The university now has two campuses, Hudong and Huxi, covering a total area of 458,000 square meters, with a total building area of 463,000 square meters of various school buildings, fixed assets of 1.136 billion yuan, including 398 million yuan worth of teaching and research instruments and equipment. The library has 1.85 million Chinese and foreign paper books and 2.6298 million kinds of e-books.
