湖北中医药大学创建于1958年,其前身是1954年成立的湖北省中医进修学校,2010年3月由原湖北中医学院更名为现名。学校是湖北省人民政府与国家中医药管理局共建高校,湖北省属重点高校,也是湖北省唯一独立设置的中医药高等学府,拥有昙华林和黄家湖两个校区,占地总面积1610亩。作为我国较早开办中医本科教育和最早开展中医研究生教育的院校之一,学校已形成涵盖医学、理学、工学、管理学、文学、教育学、经济学7个学科门类,35个本科专业的办学格局,拥有4个博士学位授权点、17个硕士学位授权点及2个一级学科博士后流动站,临床医学、药理学与毒理学科进入ESI全球排名前1%。
Hubei University of Chinese Medicine (HBUCM) was founded in 1958, with its predecessor being Hubei Provincial College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Advanced Studies established in 1954. It was renamed to its current name in March 2010 from the former Hubei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As a key provincial university and the only independent TCM higher education institution in Hubei Province, HBUCM is co-constructed by the Hubei Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university has two campuses (Tanhualin and Huangjiahu) covering a total area of 1,610 mu. Being one of the earliest institutions in China to offer undergraduate TCM education and the first to develop TCM postgraduate education, HBUCM has formed a comprehensive educational structure spanning 7 disciplines (Medicine, Science, Engineering, Management, Literature, Education, Economics) with 35 undergraduate programs. It boasts 4 doctoral degree programs, 17 master's degree programs, and 2 post-doctoral research stations, with Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology & Toxicology disciplines ranking among the top 1% globally in ESI.

HBUCM boasts a strong faculty of 1,654 staff members, including 1,226 full-time teachers and 848 with senior professional titles. The university has 3 National TCM Masters, 4 National Famous TCM Practitioners, and 13 national-level high-caliber talents such as Yangtze River Scholars and Qi Huang Scholars. In terms of discipline development, HBUCM features 15 key disciplines approved by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (including 6 high-level TCM key disciplines during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period), with Traditional Chinese Medicine designated as a Hubei Provincial First-Class Discipline Cultivation Project. It houses 5 National Clinical Key Specialties (TCM), 12 State Administration of TCM Key Specialties, and 2 National Regional TCM Diagnosis and Treatment Centers.
