湖南工学院坐落于湖南省第二大城市、湖湘文化发源地之一的衡阳市，是2007年经教育部批准由湖南建材高等专科学校和湖南大学衡阳分校合并升格的省属公办普通本科院校，2009年12月湖南工业科技职工大学整体并入，是教育部卓越工程师教育培养计划高校、湖南省硕士学位授予立项建设单位。学校立足衡阳，面向湖南，辐射全国，重点面向现代工业企业，为区域经济建设和社会发展服务，是一所以工为主，经、管、文、理、艺等多学科协调发展，具有较强的科技服务能力，培养基础实、技术精、能力强、素质高，具有创新精神与社会责任感的应用型专门人才的本科院校。

Hunan Institute of Technology is located in Hengyang, the second largest city in Hunan Province and one of the birthplaces of Huxiang culture. It is a provincial public ordinary undergraduate university approved by the Ministry of Education in 2007 through the merger and upgrading of Hunan Building Materials College and Hengyang Branch of Hunan University. In December 2009, Hunan University of Industrial Science and Technology was fully merged into the institute. It is a university under the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education and a project-construction unit for granting master's degrees in Hunan Province. Based in Hengyang, facing Hunan and radiating the whole country, the university focuses on serving modern industrial enterprises and regional economic construction and social development. It is an undergraduate institution dominated by engineering, with coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as economics, management, literature, science, and art. It has strong scientific and technological service capabilities and cultivates applied professionals with solid foundations, exquisite skills, strong abilities, high quality, innovative spirit and social responsibility.

学校现有三个校区，占地1400余亩，校舍建筑面积61万余平方米。教学科研仪器设备总值2.8亿元，图书馆纸质藏书175万余册。现有全日制在校生20503人，教职工近1300人，其中高级职称400余人，博、硕士900余人。拥有享受国务院政府特殊津贴专家6人、湖南省新世纪121人才工程人选6人，以及一批教育部思想政治教育中青年杰出人才、全国优秀教师等高水平教师。设有17个二级教学院（部），52个本科专业，其中国家一流本科专业建设点4个，通过中国工程教育认证专业3个，教育部特色专业1个，教育部卓越计划试点专业3个；省一流专业建设点12个，省特色专业和重点资助建设专业4个。

The university currently has three campuses, covering an area of more than 1,400 mu, with a school building area of over 610,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 280 million yuan, and the library has more than 1.75 million paper books. There are 20,503 full-time students and nearly 1,300 faculty members, including over 400 with senior professional titles and nearly 900 with doctoral or master's degrees. It has 6 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, 6 candidates for the "New Century 121 Talent Project" in Hunan Province, as well as a group of high-level teachers such as outstanding young and middle-aged talents in ideological and political education of the Ministry of Education and national excellent teachers. The university has 17 secondary teaching colleges (departments) and 52 undergraduate majors, including 4 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 3 majors accredited by China Engineering Education Accreditation, 1 characteristic major of the Ministry of Education, 3 pilot majors of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Program"; 12 provincial first-class major construction sites, and 4 provincial characteristic majors and key funded construction majors.

学校注重实践教学与科研创新，现有国家级大学生校外实践教育基地1个，省级创新创业教育平台和基地30个；国家地方联合工程实验室1个，省级科研平台19个。近年来承担各级各类科研项目2300余项，获厅局级以上科研成果奖励56项，授权专利708项。与309家企业开展校企合作，实施项目式、两嵌入式等协同育人机制，致力于建设特色鲜明的区域性高水平应用型大学。

The university emphasizes practical teaching and scientific research innovation. It currently has 1 national-level off-campus practical education base for college students and 30 provincial-level innovation and entrepreneurship education platforms and bases; 1 national-local joint engineering laboratory and 19 provincial-level scientific research platforms. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 2,300 scientific research projects at all levels, won 56 scientific research achievement awards above the departmental level, and obtained 708 authorized patents. It has carried out school-enterprise cooperation with 309 enterprises, implemented project-based and two-embedded collaborative education mechanisms, and is committed to building a distinctive regional high-level application-oriented university.
