湖南工程学院坐落于一代伟人毛泽东的故乡湖南省湘潭市，是经教育部批准、湖南省人民政府举办的全日制普通高等学校。学校是硕士学位授予单位，教育部首批卓越工程师教育培养计划实施高校，全国首批服务国家特殊需求人才培养项目硕士专业学位试点高校，全国地方高校卓越工程教育校企联盟理事长单位，湖南省首批2011计划入选高校，湖南省双一流建设高水平应用特色学院，湖南省本科一批录取高校。

Hunan Institute of Engineering is located in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, the hometown of the great man Mao Zedong. It is a full-time ordinary higher education institution approved by the Ministry of Education and run by the People's Government of Hunan Province. The university is a master's degree-granting unit, one of the first universities to implement the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education, one of the first pilot universities for master's professional degrees in the talent training program serving national special needs, the chairman unit of the National Alliance of Local Universities for Excellent Engineering Education, one of the first universities selected into the "2011 Plan" of Hunan Province, a high-level application-oriented characteristic college in the "Double First-Class" construction of Hunan Province, and a university admitting students in the first batch of undergraduate programs in Hunan Province.

湖南工程学院由原湘潭机电高等专科学校和湖南纺织高等专科学校于2000年6月合并组建而成。湘潭机电高等专科学校始创于1951年，隶属于原国家机械工业部，是全国示范性高等工程专科重点建设学校；湖南纺织高等专科学校始创于1978年，隶属于原湖南省纺织工业厅。学校现有主校区和书院路校区2个校区，校园占地面积1830.6亩，建筑面积58.8万㎡，是湖南省园林式单位、文明标兵校园。学校坚守工程教育74年，积淀深厚，始终立足湖南、面向全国、服务基层，为机电、纺织行业和社会经济建设输送了20万余名高素质应用型人才。

Hunan Institute of Engineering was established in June 2000 by the merger of the former Xiangtan Mechanical and Electrical College and Hunan Textile College. Xiangtan Mechanical and Electrical College, founded in 1951, was affiliated to the former Ministry of Machinery Industry and was a key construction school of national demonstration higher engineering colleges; Hunan Textile College, founded in 1978, was affiliated to the former Hunan Provincial Textile Industry Department. The university now has two campuses: the main campus and the Shuyuan Road campus, covering an area of 1830.6 mu with a building area of 588,000 square meters. It is a garden-style unit and a civilized model campus in Hunan Province. Adhering to engineering education for 74 years with profound accumulation, the university has always been based in Hunan, facing the whole country and serving the grassroots, and has cultivated more than 200,000 high-quality applied talents for the electromechanical, textile industries and social economic construction.

学校以工为主，多学科协调发展，涵盖工、管、文、理、经、艺等6个学科门类，形成了电气、机械、纺织、化工、管理、信息等优势专业群。现有18个教学单位、49个本科招生专业、2个专业硕士学位点。工程学学科进入ESI全球前1%，工程教育改革成果获国家级教学成果二等奖。现有8个湖南省双一流建设应用特色学科；教育部卓越计划实施专业8个，国家级一流本科专业建设点6个、省级一流本科专业建设点24个；4个专业通过工程教育专业认证。

The university focuses on engineering and develops multi-disciplines in a coordinated manner, covering 6 disciplines including engineering, management, liberal arts, science, economics and art, forming advantageous professional groups such as electrical engineering, machinery, textiles, chemical engineering, management and information. It has 18 teaching units, 49 undergraduate enrollment majors and 2 professional master's degree programs. The discipline of Engineering has entered the top 1% of ESI globally, and the achievements of engineering education reform have won the second prize of national teaching achievements. There are 8 applied characteristic disciplines in the "Double First-Class" construction of Hunan Province; 8 majors implementing the Excellent Program of the Ministry of Education; 6 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites and 24 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites; 4 majors have passed the engineering education professional certification.

学校坚持人才强校战略，师资队伍结构合理，实力突出。现有教职工1400余人，其中高级职称教师400余人，博士生、硕士生导师近200人。聘有院士、杰青等国家级高层次人才9人。拥有国务院特贴专家、全国优秀教师、教育部教指委委员等11人；中国科协托举人才、教育部新世纪优秀人才等4人；省政府特贴专家、省教学名师、省杰青等近100人，省级教学、科研团队14个。
