湖南科技大学坐落在国家“两型社会”建设综合配套改革试验区——湖南省湘潭市，是国家国防科技工业局与湖南省人民政府共建高校、湖南省“国内一流大学建设高校”（A类）、湖南省重点建设高校。学校肇始于1949年成立的湘北建设学院，历经多校合并、更名，2003年由湘潭工学院与湘潭师范学院合并组建为湖南科技大学。

Hunan University of Science and Technology is located in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, a comprehensive supporting reform pilot zone for the construction of a "resource-conserving and environment-friendly society" in China. It is a university jointly built by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the People's Government of Hunan Province, a "domestic first-class university construction university" (Class A) in Hunan Province, and a key construction university in Hunan Province. The university originated from Xiangbei Construction College founded in 1949, and after several mergers and name changes, it was established as Hunan University of Science and Technology in 2003 by the merger of Xiangtan Institute of Technology and Xiangtan Normal University.

学校现有全日制在校本科生34000余人，硕士、博士研究生6000余人，教职工2600余人，其中正高职称340余人，副高职称660余人，国家“万人计划”领军人才、“长江学者”等国家级人才30余人，教育部新世纪优秀人才、湖南省“芙蓉学者”等省部级人才360余人。学校设有20个教学院及继续教育学院、国际教育学院，86个本科专业覆盖11大学科门类，拥有3个一级学科博士学位授权点，33个一级学科硕士学位授权点，16种专业硕士学位授权类别。

The university currently has more than 34,000 full-time undergraduates, more than 6,000 master's and doctoral students, and more than 2,600 faculty members, including more than 340 with senior professional titles and more than 660 with associate senior professional titles. There are more than 30 national-level talents such as leading talents of the "National Ten Thousand Talents Program" and "Changjiang Scholars", and more than 360 provincial and ministerial-level talents such as outstanding talents of the Ministry of Education in the new century and "Hibiscus Scholars" of Hunan Province. The university has 20 teaching colleges, a College of Continuing Education, and a College of International Education. 86 undergraduate majors cover 11 disciplines, with 3 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 33 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 16 professional master's degree authorization categories.
