The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM) is the oldest and largest public research university in Mexico. Founded in 1551 as the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico, it was reestablished and renamed to its current title after the Mexican Revolution in 1910. Renowned as a top higher education institution in Latin America, it excels in academic research, cultural preservation, and social impact, ranking 1st in Latin America and 103rd globally in the 2021 QS World University Rankings.

Its main campus (Ciudad Universitaria), located in southern Mexico City, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Famous for its modernist architectural style and rich mural art, the campus features works by renowned Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Spanning approximately 7.3 square kilometers, the campus houses 24 faculties, 15 research institutes, and 4 interdisciplinary research centers, covering a comprehensive range of disciplines from natural sciences and engineering to humanities, social sciences, and arts & design.

As an autonomous university, UNAM enjoys a high degree of academic freedom and administrative autonomy. Its funding primarily comes from government allocations while maintaining independent academic decision-making. The university currently has approximately 340,000 students (including undergraduates, postgraduates, and continuing education students) and over 45,000 faculty and staff, including 1 Nobel laureate (Chemistry, 1995), 1 Pulitzer Prize winner, and numerous recipients of Mexico's National Science Award.
