National University of San Marcos (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos) is a public research university located in Lima, the capital of Peru. Known as "the Dean of American Colleges", it is the oldest officially established university in the Americas. Founded by a royal charter signed by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor on May 12, 1551, the university holds a pivotal position in Peruvian higher education and consistently ranks among the top two universities in the country. As the only Peruvian institution to have produced a Nobel laureate (Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel Prize in Literature), its academic reputation is widely recognized throughout Latin America.

The university comprises 20 faculties, 6 academic areas, and 60 professional schools, offering a comprehensive educational system from undergraduate to postgraduate levels. It has over 30,000 undergraduate students, more than 4,000 graduate students, and a number of international students. The main campus is located in the Lima University City and houses several public institutions such as the San Marcos Cultural Center and the Lima Natural History Museum, forming an academic community integrating teaching, research, and cultural dissemination. Its educational model emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, encouraging students to participate in internships and community services, while also offering English-taught international programs to attract global talent.
