The University of Hamburg, located in Hamburg, Germany, is the largest public comprehensive university in northern Germany. Founded in 1919, its origins can be traced back to the Johanneum Higher School established in 1529 by Protestant reformer Johannes Bugenhagen. As a member of the German U15 University Alliance, the university excels in marine research, climate science, medicine, and other disciplines, having produced 6 Nobel laureates, including Harald zur Hausen (2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine). Chinese mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern also earned his doctorate here.

The university comprises six faculties: Law, Economics and Social Sciences, Medicine, Education and Psychology, Humanities, and Mathematics and Natural Sciences, offering a complete education system from undergraduate to doctoral levels. Campuses are scattered across Hamburg, with the main campus in the Eimsbüttel district in the west, and the medical faculty closely integrated with affiliated hospitals. Recent data shows approximately 42,000 students, with international students accounting for nearly 10%. Consistently ranked among the top 200 universities worldwide in QS rankings, its linguistics, law, and physics programs are ranked among the top 50 globally.
