The University of Canterbury (UC), founded in 1873 and located in Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island, is the second-oldest research university in New Zealand and a member of the 21st Century Academic Alliance and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Its predecessor, Canterbury College, was part of the University of New Zealand before becoming an independent university in 1961 and relocating to the Ilam campus. UC excels in engineering, business, and education, with its engineering school being the oldest and most comprehensive in New Zealand, and its business school holding triple international accreditations (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS). It is the only university in New Zealand offering a Speech and Language Therapy program. The 76-hectare campus, adjacent to the Avon River, features 5 libraries (over 1.3 million volumes) and advanced laboratories.
