The University of the Western Cape (UWC) was founded in 1960 and is located in the Bellville district of Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa. As a comprehensive public university with profound historical roots, it was initially established for people of color and served as a key base for academic anti-apartheid movements during the apartheid era. Today, it has evolved into one of South Africa's most inclusive higher education institutions, deeply involved in local social development and transformation.

学校主校区距离开普敦市中心约20公里，校园环境优美，周边环绕自然保护区与山景，享有地中海气候带来的温和条件。依托开普敦的地理与学术资源，西开普大学在自由开放源码软件研究、健康科学（如牙医学、中草药研究）、社会科学及环境科学等领域形成显著特色，是开放课件联盟在非洲的唯一成员。

The main campus is approximately 20 kilometers from Cape Town's city center, boasting a scenic environment surrounded by nature reserves and mountain views, with a mild Mediterranean climate. Leveraging Cape Town's geographical and academic resources, UWC has developed distinctive strengths in open-source software research, health sciences (e.g., dentistry, Chinese herbal medicine), social sciences, and environmental science. It is the only African member of the OpenCourseWare Consortium.

UWC comprises seven faculties, covering humanities, community and health sciences, dentistry, economics and management, education, law, and natural sciences, offering programs from undergraduate to doctoral levels. The university provides comprehensive facilities, including modern libraries, computer labs, student dormitories, and sports/recreation amenities. It currently hosts over 600 international students from dozens of countries and maintains close collaborative relationships with universities worldwide.
